What is GST Annual GSTR-9 Return
According to the Central Goods and Services Act, 2017, every listed business must file GSTR-9 once a year. This form includes details about all sales, purchases, refunds, and input tax credits for taxpayers, Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units, SEZ developers, and others.
Who is Liable for GSTR-9 Filing and what is the Due Date?
Under the new GST rules, you can choose to file your GSTR-9 tax return voluntarily. However, if your annual turnover is above ₹2 crore, it's mandatory to file GSTR-9. If your turnover is above ₹5 crore, you must also file GSTR-9C for a GST audit. The deadline to file the GST return is October 31 for the previous financial year. However, this date can be changed or extended based on updates from the Government of India.
Late Fees/Penalty for not Filing GSTR-9 On Time
If someone or a business doesn't file GSTR-9 on time, they have to pay a fine of Rs. 200 per day, starting from the deadline. According to the GST Act, 2017, this penalty will keep adding up, and they'll also have to pay interest at 18% per year on the total amount.
Why You Must File Annual GSTR-9 On Time?
Abolition of the Cascading Effect
GSTR-9 filing makes the tax process easier by removing the issue of paying tax on top of other taxes.
An Organized Taxation System
The business identities are allowed here to pay the entire tax amount at a single time. GST return filing has replaced the chaotic older tax system.
Assisting Your Own Entity
Thanks to changes in the Indian tax system, businesses can now sell their products across the entire country without having to pay separate taxes in each state.
Business Opportunities
Previously, businesses with an annual turnover of Rs 5,00,000 had to pay VAT, which was difficult for many companies, especially new ones. Now, VAT has been replaced by GSTR-9 return filing, which is more beneficial, particularly for SEZ Units.
